The Phantom Defense 9mm Ghoulie 139 grain Subsonic Solid Copper Expander was developed in response to direct industry dialogue regarding the practical terminal performance limitations commonly observed in conventional 9mm ammunition. During discussions with multiple weapons manufacturers and professional users, a consistent concern emerged: many available 9mm loads did not deliver the reliability and terminal effectiveness expected from modern defensive cartridges. Those discussions ultimately resulted in a direct request to develop a purpose-built subsonic, solid copper 9mm projectile engineered to function reliably in both suppressed and unsuppressed handguns while delivering meaningful terminal performance. The Ghoulie uses a 139 grain monolithic copper expanding projectile designed to open reliably at subsonic velocities, producing a large wound cavity while retaining mass for deep penetration and improved barrier performance. While subsonic ammunition is often associated with reduced lethality due to lower velocity, that assumption fails to account for projectile mass and expansion mechanics; the Ghoulie’s expansion profile and increased mass generate substantial tissue disruption while maintaining the penetration characteristics expected from a serious defensive round.

The cartridge pairs particularly well with handgun-based systems such as the Flux Raider, where subsonic 9mm naturally complements the engagement distances and controllability these platforms are designed around. The rise of booster-less 9mm handgun suppressors has further increased the practical utility of these systems, making suppressed handgun platforms significantly more interesting from both a reliability and performance standpoint. This round is not designed or tested or expected to run in 9mm ar platforms. We don't recommend use in those systems because we think they are dumb and we don't like them.
