190 gr Sub-X | Remanufactured Brass

This loading utilizes the 190 grain Sub-X projectile, originally developed by Hornady for subsonic applications where controlled expansion at lower velocities is required. The Sub-X (Subsonic eXpanding) bullet is characterized by a lead core with a cannelured jacket and a polymer Flex Tip insert. This design is intended to promote reliable expansion at velocities typically below 1,050 fps, while maintaining sufficient structural integrity for moderate penetration.

From a ballistic standpoint, the Sub-X projectile operates in a narrower performance window compared to heavier, purpose-built subsonic projectiles. Its lighter mass (190 gr vs. 200–220 gr class bullets) results in lower overall system pressure when loaded to subsonic velocities. As a consequence, this round generates less gas volume and backpressure, which can affect cycling reliability depending on the host platform, gas system configuration, and suppressor use. Users may observe reduced bolt velocity or inconsistent cycling in platforms that are not tuned for lower-pressure subsonic ammunition.

Terminally, the Sub-X is designed to expand at subsonic impact velocities, aided by the Flex Tip initiating expansion upon contact. However, compared to bonded or solid copper subsonic projectiles, expansion consistency can vary depending on impact velocity and intermediate barriers. It is best understood as a general-purpose expanding subsonic bullet rather than a top-tier terminal performer.

This loading is assembled using remanufactured brass cases that have been fully processed, inspected, and resized to meet functional standards. Reman brass allows for cost reduction while maintaining acceptable consistency for range use, training, and general-purpose shooting. That said, case-to-case variation will typically be higher than with new production brass, which may result in slightly wider velocity spreads.

Overall, this round is positioned as a budget-oriented subsonic option. It provides functional performance and acceptable terminal characteristics at a lower cost, but does not match the pressure curve optimization, cycling reliability, or terminal consistency of higher-end subsonic loads. It is well-suited for applications where cost efficiency is a primary consideration and absolute performance is not the primary requirement.

Summary Characteristics:

  • 190 gr Sub-X projectile with polymer Flex Tip for low-velocity expansion

  • Subsonic velocity regime (~1,000–1,050 fps, platform dependent)

  • Lower pressure curve relative to heavier subsonic loads

  • Intended for training, general-purpose use, and cost-sensitive applications

This is a functional, economical subsonic load designed to perform within its constraints—not to exceed them.

    Undergassed

FTF and No LRBHO with 8.3 Hanson and ODB. This is not a problem with PD because the 110 VMAX, 200, and 220gr reloads run flawless. The 190gr projectile uses less powder and due to its shape, plus shorter OAL, is harder to feed and cycle. On the plus side its quieter and has less recoil but it will not be reliable without a reduced power spring. I even with beveled lugs and polished feed ramps. My gas port size is 0.125in and it's on the very edge of reliability with an SA AGB wide open where all other rounds runs flawless 4 clicks restricted. I'll try the 200gr slow papi next.

Wow, is all I can say. Popped my suppressor cherry with these and impressed is an understatement (suppressed would've been a cheeky little pun there). In all seriousness though supper happy with my purchase, shipping takes a little while so I would order ahead of time. My 10.5 1/8 with a yhm r9 enjoyed these as well. They arent to bad on the wallet. Very happy customer, will definitely be purchasing more!! Thanks phantom!!

Phantom has a great price for this round. It cycles great in my rifle, and is accurate. I'm stocking up my 300blk from Phantom with this round, the 110Vmax, and the 220 FMJ. Look no further!

    300 AAC Blackout - 190 gr Sub X

Awesome ammunition! I finally had time to take my suppressed 16" 300 BLK AR to the range and sight in my LPVO scope. Once I got it dialed in, I was shooting sub-MOA at 100 yards. That's about as far as I want to push this round. I have a lot of confidence I will see a Hog drop where it stands on my next hunt!

Works flawlessly in my 7.5" 1:8 twist PDW. I generally don't go over 190gr because of the twist in this upper. This stuff performs flawlessly. Will, and have, order more.
