The 6mm Advanced Rifle Cartridge (6×38mm), or 6mm ARC, is a 6 mm (.243 caliber) intermediate rifle cartridge introduced by Hornady in 2020. Developed at the request of a specialized group within the U.S. Department of Defense for its multipurpose combat rifle program, the 6mm ARC was designed to deliver low recoil, exceptional accuracy, and extended range performance in the M16 platform.
The 6mm ARC utilizes 6 mm (.243 in) bullets, which are renowned for their high ballistic coefficients due to their favorable sectional density. This design minimizes drag and enhances energy retention over long distances. Upon its release, Hornady introduced three factory loads with 103, 105, and 108-grain bullet weights, offering impressive G1 ballistic coefficients of .512, .530, and .536, respectively, showcasing the cartridge’s capability for long-range precision.
Compared to the 6.5mm Grendel, the 6mm ARC delivers improved ballistics by achieving higher muzzle velocities with lighter 6 mm bullets while still retaining sufficient power to use heavier bullet options effectively. It offers performance on par with cartridges like the .243 Winchester and 6mm Creedmoor, but in a more compact design with reduced recoil. This allows the 6mm ARC to fit seamlessly into standard AR-15 length actions, making it a versatile choice for shooters seeking long-range capabilities in a lightweight and maneuverable platform.
